What Sulfur Monochloride, Diesel Biocide, and Tomato Fertilizer Taught Me About Chemical Pricing

Sitting in my office last spring, I had a browser tab open that I was slightly embarrassed to show anyone: "do plants need fertilizer?"

My wife's tomato plants were yellowing. She wanted a straight answer, so I did the modern thing and Googled it. The search results were full of "it depends." Fertilizer isn't one product. Tomatoes need a different nutrient balance than grass, and too much nitrogen produces big green leaves with almost no fruit.

Let me rephrase that: if a supplier can't confirm the product's chemistry in writing, that's not a small oversight. It's the whole deal. A chemical order without a confirmed formula is a guess. The Diesel Biocide We Skipped "Just This Once"

We keep a backup diesel generator for power outages. Its fuel tank sits mostly full for months between uses—a textbook breeding ground for microbes if any water condenses in. A tomato plant with yellowing leaves might need nitrogen, or magnesium, or just better drainage. The brand name on the bag won't tell you which. The analysis printed underneath will.

The product name tells you what someone wants to sell you. The specification tells you what's actually in the package. Buy the specification, not the name.

That's the sentence I wish I'd had in 2021. It applies equally to sulfur monochloride, to diesel biocide additive, and to a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer.

What I Do Differently Now

I've turned all of this into a checklist. It's not a fancy system—just a short list of questions I run on every chemical order. In the past 18 months, that checklist has caught 47 potential errors. Some were tiny. A few were big enough to save us thousands.

  • Verify the exact chemical formula, not the trade name. If a product can't be described in unambiguous chemistry, I don't buy it.
  • Ask for the technical data sheet before the PO, not after. Every legitimate supplier has one. If they don't, that's informative.
  • Ask what's not included: purity, packaging, storage conditions, shelf life, disposal requirements. A low unit price is meaningless if the hidden costs appear later.
  • Get the full landed price in writing. Delivery, handling, documentation—the lot.
