On a Friday afternoon in March 2024, the safety manager put a note on my desk: Need a flame retardant hood for the solvent lab by next week. I read it twice. Nail resin? We make adhesive for plastic and rubber parts, not nail polish. Why would a solvent based glue need a nail resin? Procurement Lesson
Why might you need to know about nail resins? From where I sit, it's not because you'll ever manufacture polish. It's because specialty chemicals are named by chemistry and market, not by tidy boxes. A product can live in a nail resin category and still be the answer to a sticky solvent adhesive problem.
The vendor who says 'this isn't our strength—here's who does it better' earns trust for everything else. That is what the LANXESS resin representative did. I didn't need to know all the chemistry. I just needed to know when to ask.
Next time a strange name appears on a request, I won't let the finance system be my technical reviewer. I'll call someone who knows the material. Sometimes the answer is simple. Sometimes the answer saves a project.
