Buying Lanxess? Here’s What I’ve Learned After Years of Managing Chemical Procurement

I’m a procurement manager at a 300-person specialty chemical formulator. Over the last 6 years, I’ve managed an annual budget of just over $2.1 million and negotiated with maybe 50 different chemical suppliers. I’ve documented every order, every quality complaint, and every hidden fee. So when people ask me about Lanxess, they’re usually looking for practical answers, not marketing fluff. 1. Is Lanxess a reliable chemical plant supplier for core raw materials?

Short answer: Yes, with caveats. When I audit our 2023 spending, Lanxess was one of our top 3 suppliers by volume. Their production consistency is excellent—I can count on one hand the number of off-spec shipments we’ve received in 4 years. But reliability comes at a cost. 2. Does Lanxess really make lubricant additives that are cost-effective?

I went back and forth on this for about a month. We were sourcing a high-performance lubricant additive for a new industrial gear oil. Lanxess offered a solid product at $12.50/kg. A smaller competitor offered a similar spec at $9.80/kg. The upside of going cheap was saving nearly $2,700 on the first order. The risk? The competitor’s additive had marginally lower thermal stability. I kept asking myself: is $2,700 worth potentially voiding our customer’s warranty? We went with Lanxess. In this case, their technical support helped us optimize the dosage, saving us about 12% on usage anyway. So the net cost difference wasn’t as big as it looked on paper.

3. I need to add color to epoxy resin. What should I consider besides price?

This one trips up a lot of people. If you search "add color to epoxy resin," you’ll get a ton of art-supply results. But for industrial use, the question is about compatibility and dispersibility. Using a standard pigment meant for paints can ruin the resin’s mechanical properties. I still kick myself for not checking the dispersant system on a batch we did in Q2 last year. If I remember correctly, all hazardous chemicals require a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) under OSHA—no exception. But the real question is about the quality of the SDS. Lanxess provides an extremely detailed SDS for nitric acid (and pretty much everything else). I want to say their SDS for 68% nitric acid includes specific handling data for different storage temperatures, not just generic boilerplate. For a procurement manager, a good SDS means fewer calls from the safety officer and less time spent on compliance. That’s a hidden cost saving that doesn’t show up on the invoice. I’ve seen generic SDS documents that could have gotten us into trouble during an audit. So yes, the source matters.

5. Can I use epoxy resin as glue? Is putting resin in a tube worth the premium?

Technically, yes, you can use a two-part epoxy as an adhesive. What you’re really asking is: should you, and is a specialized product worth it? I went back and forth between using our stock Lanxess epoxy resin (which we buy in bulk for coatings) and buying a pre-formulated industrial adhesive for a specific assembly job. The bulk resin was almost free on a per-kilo basis compared to the adhesive. The risk was the cure time and the surface preparation. An adhesive formulation is designed to bond; a general resin isn't. I calculated the worst case: a complete bond failure, costing us about $3,000 in rework and lost time. We bought the pre-formulated adhesive. The expected value said it was the safer bet, and even though my gut said we could make the bulk resin work, the downside felt too catastrophic. So, no—don’t just use plain resin as glue unless you’re just prototyping. For production, get the right tool.

6. Is Lanxess’s bio-based flame retardant line actually cost-competitive?

This is a newer area for them, and we’ve tested two products in the last year. Their bio-based options are still priced at a premium of about 15-20% over traditional halogenated flame retardants. But we’ve seen a shift in some of our downstream customers demanding 'greener' formulations. If you can pass that cost down, the bio-based line is a great tool for differentiation. The quality has been fairly consistent so far. One caveat: their bio-based product for polycarbonate blends had a longer lead time (4 weeks vs. 2 weeks for the standard version) as of late 2024. That sort of thing can kill your production schedule if you’re not careful.

To sum it up: Lanxess is a premium, reliable partner. They are rarely the cheapest option, but in my experience, the hidden costs of going with a 'cheaper' vendor often make Lanxess the more cost-effective choice in the long run. Just don’t expect your finance team to see that on the initial quote.
