Our real Lanxess distributor, once I explained the urgency, pulled off a partial delivery for the molding line. The material arrived in three days. Every drum had the correct Lanxess logo, a batch number, and a CoA that matched the batch number exactly. The price was higher than the shady quote—but not by as much as you'd think. And nobody had to chase a refund for unusable chemicals.

The Floor Project and a Detour into Acetone
Meanwhile, the metallic epoxy resin floor project turned into my side headache. The marketing made it sound amazing: a glossy, seamless floor that looked like polished stone. But the contractors kept saying 'metallic epoxy' with a hushed voice, and the quotes were almost double what standard pigmented epoxy cost. - Ask for the CoA before the PO, not after. A supplier who hesitates is telling you something.
- Check the physical details. Logo, batch numbers, label layout. Every drum, not just the one in the email photo.
- For cleaning solvents, read the MSDS, not just the internet. 'Does it work?' is not the same as 'Is it safe for this specific surface?'
I almost saved $800 on that first order. Instead, I got a three-day delivery from a real distributor, a floor that doesn't bubble under forklift wheels, and a folder full of certificates that will satisfy any future audit. The vendor who looked too good? They called me for two more weeks, each time with a new reason to order 'just one drum.' Each time I asked for the CoA. Each time the line went quiet.
I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining supplier verification to someone new than spend two weeks explaining a batch failure to my boss. An informed customer is better for everyone. I'm still not a chemist, and I probably never will be. But I know exactly who I'm buying from, and that's the part I control.
